Somemunicipalities require a device called an "air gap" to be installedwith all dishwashers. This prevents the dirty water in the dishwasher frombeing siphoned back into the water supply. However, this is not yet arequirement everywhere. If you live in a location without these restrictions,you can install a dishwasher without an air gap.

1. Locate thedishwasher. This appliance needs three connections to work properly:electricity, water and sewage. The easiest place to put your dishwasher isright next to your kitchen sink. Use a tape measure to make sure there isenough room under the counter to hold the dishwasher, and the depth of thecounter allows room for appliances.

2. Make sure your dishwasher has a free circuit on the mainpanel, as these appliances use a lot of power. Connecta wire from the main panel to where you will install the dishwasher. Unless you are a qualified electrician, you must have aprofessional to do this.

3. Check sewageoutlets. There are two options that you can connect to the dishwasher drain:sink traps or garbage disposal. If you have a handle, it should already have anextra inlet dishwasher drain hose. If you are connecting the sink trap withoutthe drain hose inlet, you will have to install a new trap with the dishwasherdrain inlet. If you are unsure about the connection, consult a professional.

4. Remove anypackaging from the dishwasher, including any shipping screws. These are placedtogether to keep the dishwasher in transit. Follow the manufacturer'sinstructions.

5. Move thedishwasher to where it needs to be installed, but don't put it in the rightplace. For example, if the dishwasher is to be installed under the kitchencounter, move it next to the counter, but not under it. This will allow you toconnect the utilities needed for the dishwasher.

6. Connect thewater hose from the water supply valve below to the gasket. Wrap the threads ofthe water supply with the plumber's tape and thread the hose connector throughthe water supply. First tighten by hand, then add an extra bend with anadjustable wrench.

7. Connect theelectric wire from Step 2 to the terminals on the dishwasher. Secure in placewith the electrical tape.

8. Run a drain hosefrom the dishwasher to either the sink trap or the garbage disposal. Secure inplace with hose clamps.

9. Push thedishwasher into its final location, but not all the way. This will allow you tocheck on the drain and supply hoses in the next step.

10.Restore power tothe dishwasher circuit. Run a test wash in the washer, but do not load it withany dishes. Watch the water supply and drain hoses to make sure they are notleaking. Tighten any couplings or clamps as needed.
